Fiat-factory Melfi about to be renovated
The Fiat-factory in Melfi (San Nicola di Melfi to be precise), where the Punto is now being produced on a very low level because of the crisis, is expected to be thoroughly renovated next year into a hypermodern production location for new compact models in the B-segment. Observant AutoEdizione.com-readers already saw in September that the government had put its signatures in order for this metamorphosis to be executed.
Quattroruote announced yesterday that a delegation of the top management of the concern visited the factory yesterday, because of these renovations. The Fiat-management is thus turning a need into a virtue by using this calm period for the restructuring. The successor to the Punto, the 500X and the Jeepster will be produced on the most modern assembly lines, which will be operating according to the WCM-principle just like in Pomigliano d’Arco. The ‘Società Automobilistica Tecnologie Avanzate’ (SATA) factory in the province Potenza was built early nineties (picture below) for the production of the first Fiat Punto. Today, still, this modern factory guarantees a solid-quality-production, and apparently it will only get better in the near future.
